Advisor Q&A

What learning experiences prepared you for this role?

From as early as I can remember, I have always been a saver.  As a child, I always saved up my own money for larger items I wanted.  My grandfather passed on his frugality through many discussions around money and his experiences through the Great Depression.  This has led to a deeper focus on value investing.  I began working small jobs as early as 8 and officially started working at the golf course at age 13.  This allowed me to save for my car, a portion of college, and some long-term investments.  Once I knew I could not be Indiana Jones, I knew I would be in finance and worked as an intern as soon as could be allowed.  As an intern, I worked closely with a senior vice president learning how to communicate with clients and the ins and outs of real-world investment management.  I focused on graduating early so I could move into the financial services industry helping 401K participants.

What does a typical day look like for you?

During the week, I start my day by finalizing and focusing on research for both clients and prospects as well as educating myself on any important changes.  Then I help get the kids (4 boys) started for their day.  Soon after, I am able to focus on a day filled with phone calls and/or meetings.  Usually I will host one or two webinars a week on retirement transition or other important company related topics.  I spend as much time in the evening with my family, but then work a few hours at night to catch up and run additional research or detailed plans and recommendation for clients and prospects.  The weekend may involve some work, but it is usually reserved for my family and hopefully some golf.  I am married to Christine and we have 4 young boys.

How important is educating clients in your process?

Educating clients and anyone who needs help is the foremost focus of my career.  Everything else falls into place from there.  It is my goal that everyone has the opportunity to learn and understand as much as they want especially when it comes to making major financial decisions.  At the end of the day, we are here to hold your hand and manage your retirement.  We will educate to the full extent you desire, whether that be keeping you in the loop every step of the way or even if you tell us not to bother you with the details.  I am available to tell you what we are doing and why we are doing it.  Many clients soak up the education early on and then slowly have a better understanding of the process and fully trust The Retirement Group to manage their retirement and family legacy.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Being a financial advisor focused on helping corporate employees transition to retirement actually provides many rewarding events.  The first reward is the Aha! moment when a prospect realizes how much help we are providing for free.  Holding someone’s hand through the entire retirement process is very rewarding and creating extremely long-term relationships provides me a perpetual reward.  Even if I don’t work with someone, as long as I can help them avoid any mistakes, it still provides a great feeling knowing I did the right thing.
