Advisor Q&A

What learning experiences prepared you for this role?

My experience working in corporate benefits helped prepare me for this role. I was responsible for designing and implementing tax deferred group plans for corporations. This includes company pensions, 401k profit sharing plans, Simple IRA and Flexible Spending Plans.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day starts off reviewing cash flow analysis plans for upcoming appointments.  After conducting scheduled meetings, I start preparing for the appointments with households that I am talking with the following day.  Every week I conduct a webinar on a timely topic covering an aspect of an employer's benefit program, therefore time is dedicated to the preparation and delivery of that topic.

How important is educating clients in your process?

We are able to help clients understand how they will be personally impacted at the transition point of retirement therefore educating employees on their options regarding their retirement and pension benefits is critical. Having all the information available to make the most informed decision is our goal.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Getting ready for retirement leads the list of one of the most stressful points in a person's life. The most rewarding part of my job is helping people achieve security and peace of mind prior to that transition.

What motivated you to enter the financial services field?

My father was working as a financial advisor at Dean Witter in Hayward, CA.  He would wake up early each morning, take me to school, then head to work. My father, who was very frugal, insisted on carpooling from our home next to the AT&T and Chevron corporate offices to his job in Hayward. From an early age, I was taught the importance of reducing & keeping track of our family's expenses. When heading off to college, both my parents felt that I would get more value out of the experience if I got a job and paid for a share of my tuition. These lessons in managing income and expenses drove me to the financial industry and made me a better advisor.
